The Cold of Winter

Winter is a calming time of year. Winter brings the holiday season, a period of family and reflection, and for some, a period introversion and seclusion. Regardless how you and yours decide to celebrate during the festive period, reading is a must.

Everyone loves a good seasonally-appropriate novel, and that usually means Christmas. Unless, of course, you’re a science fiction or fantasy story where real Christmas would make no sense. Then a write needs to come up with something Christmas-like to fill the void.

The juxtaposition of dark Sci-fi/ fantasy mixed with the traditionally joyous holiday season, can create intriguing story lines. Some great novels are seasonally – appropriate, the www.tor.com team has come up with a list of devilishly good Christmas season or themed books, which can be viewed HERE.

Do you have any favourite frozen tales, or feel the list provided by tor.com has some glaring omissions? – Please share your thoughts below and remember to follow the conversation on Facebook and Twitter.

Paranormal Cyberpunk Vampire Fantasy

INTRO.

The bloodlust shadow hunter is on the move. From the devils own; the filthy little mud flowers scour the earth. From the kingdom of hell riders where the moon bleeds red; the undead walking is no mystery. I give you the tales from the dark dungeons of the devils tower. These are the tales from the crypt. The undead has the darkest desire to inflict the darkest fear into its victims. The dead souls are on the rise. The bloodlust shadow hunter seeks to destroy the enemy. The deadfall is here. These are the tales of the Dead Path Chronicles…

In Chapter 3 of ‘Serenity Incident’ entitled ‘Containment,’ Caprius Seaton enters the forensic lab to discover the body of his deceased friend and colleague ‘Patrick Forester.’ Overwhelmed with grief and now having to perform an autopsy on him, he composes himself to what looks to be a routine autopsy. Nothing seems out of the ordinary here. Caprius picks up the sternal saw; ready to open up Forester’s chest. But as he engages in the procedure, something astonishing happens. As Caprius’ eyes widen, Forester’s rib cage seems to be distended. Caprius’ voice goes hoarse as he tries to speak into the labs built in microphone. Not being able to contain himself, Caprius braces himself to the back counter. Holding himself up, he tries to understand what might have caused Patrick Foresters rib cage to expand so much. Mysterious as it is to him, he must perform the autopsy objectively, and with professionalism. From Caprius’ previous encounter with the mysterious and strange, he will once again be forced to make a cataclysmic decision. Unlike the previous encounter with the paranormal where the grim devil was visible and out to get him, the truth is obscure and hidden.

This entire scene was written to give you the reader suspenseful drama. As you read, you could almost hear the sound of a paranormal music and a choir singing eerie song of sadness. And as Forester’s ribs expand, you could almost hear the dark gothic music of horror. I put a lot of tension in this scene. The words are simple wonderful and the descriptions are vast; but brief.

As you continue to read this chapter you will be driven to read right to the end. Every last word is endless beauty of great writing.

Chapter 2 continues. With the incredible opening chapter of the book, to the introduction of chapter 2… I now give you the story of Caprius Seaton and Melina Hampshire. A relationship that is destined to be quite rocky and rough around the edges. Lets see how our couple is about to play out in their meeting…

A gentle breeze blew through the air, and as Melina Hampshire sat on a park bench writing on a pad of paper, she expressed her thoughts about relationships and the pirate to take the woman away on a long journey. “She had been banished from her home; to find her self in unfamiliar territory. But she was not alone. For the pirate which had won her heart, promised her a life beyond her wildest dreams. It was what she had hoped for But in her heart, she still trembled with fear knowing that he may one day…” And as Melina wrote these words on paper, the wind became a gust and blew her papers into the air. The papers blew and she screamed in anger. She was upset. She was beginning to get into her writing and lost her train of thoughts. As she looked over, there stood a man picking up her papers. He slowly walked over to her. He couldn’t help to read what she had written.

“She had been banished from her home; to find herself in unfamiliar territory. But she was not alone. For the pirate which had won her heart, promised her a life beyond her wildest dreams. It was what she had hoped for. But in her heart, she still trembled with fear knowing that he may one day…’ and what follows this Melina?” He sat down beside her. “This sounds rather familiar. Rekindling the past,” he said.

“Caprius Seaton. You shouldn’t be reading my thoughts,” said Melina.

“I wouldn’t call them thoughts. For a thought is in one’s mind, and stays there. When a thought be of something you want to say and is written down or spoken, it is no longer a thought, but articulate piece of literature or a direct comment of how one feels,” stated Caprius.

Melina Grinned warmly. “You always were one with words Caprius Seaton. Incidentally, they are words of what she has come to understand. The way things are for her.”

“Yes but you wrote she trembles in fear. Fear of what Melina? Of being alone?’ he asked. “What is it that you are writing?”

“If you must know, I’m writing a book,” she said. “And if you must know, I am seeing someone.” She crossed her arms. She looked at him sternly.

“Really? Then what is his name?” he asked.

She looked away up into the sky; still crossing her arms. “I’m not telling.”

“He wouldn’t be Fenison Torington, would he?”

“Certainly not. And certainly…. Not… you.”

“Is it my face? Have the locusts hidden my true identity”

“It isn’t your face Caprius. I know you’re hurting. But I hurt as well.”

They sat silently. She looked down holding her hands. “You’re not seeing anyone; are you?”

“No I am not. I was with that Barrington guy. Then there was Mallory. Oh and Kenny and Brad. Brad was not too bad. And Kenny; well he just went yapping away.”

“So you’re in conflict with intelligence and stamina,” replied Caprius.

“A good man should have two parts intellect and one part stamina,” she said.

“Melina your slowing down. Sexual pleasure was Fenisons strong quality. I was more on words of wisdom and a good book; with a desire for love of that of a stallion. You leaned on me. Your innuendos got my attention.”

“Love is a two way street. You took the wrong path,” said Melina.

“Melina, Fenison Torington is gone. He has gone far away. He can never come between us any more. What I did was get in touch with him to put all this to rest. Nothing more. It was closier.”

Melina gave him a warm smile. She wanted to believe him. She saw how much he wanted her back. “The cascading river of Molbivena flows rapid. The waters flow never stops. So do the broken promises of our friends.”

“Melina,” he said sadly.

“You and Fenison both; so many lies spun. Playing with my mind. You say one thing; but it changes. Then you try to win my heart again. And the foolish school girl that I was, I said yes. And I believed you. I was young and naïve. I didn’t know any better. Both of you had your way with me.” She looked at him intently. “But I have grown. And I cover my eyes and ears.” She puckered her lips then spoke. “Those were precious times to me. There was the good, and the bad. But it was those bad times that really sets my mind on fire. And I don’t know if there is a wind strong enough to blow away the high flames of past.

Caprius held her papers in one hand and put his other hands on her hands. “Things happen. People can change. Give me another chance Melina.”

She looked at him with puppy eyes. They stared into each other’s eyes intensively. “I would like to believe you Caprius Seaton. But I’ve been hurt too many times. Caprius handed her the papers. Melina got off the bench. “Good day Caprius.” She began to walk away. She looked back at him, throwing him a kiss.

“Innuendos,” he said. “There is hope after all.” He sat back with a slight warm smile.

Well, the couple is reunited. Or are they. At the end of the chapter, what did Melina mean by throwing Caprius a kiss? Is this a promise of something for to come? Or, was that a farewell kiss. Meaning good-bye is forever. Well… we’ll just have to see how this plays out.

We begin chapter 2 of Serenity Incident. After eliminating the horrid Goncools at the Triconian Simulation tower, Caprius Seaton is thankful for his good friend Simon saving his life. Both thankful to each other. But hard days still lay ahead. And there’s no clue to what the dark lord has in store for Caprius. Yes, Caprius did successfully destroy the Goncools with the help of Simon. But the dark lords heart is heavy. And with his henchmen destroyed, you can be sure that he means to strike again. But for now, Caprius takes leave and relaxes in the comfort of taking a stroll in the garden of Meadow-lie. Haunted by his past, he is about to confront his high school sweetheart – Melina Hampshire. Could there be love once again for our hero? Or has the high flames of the past blown away his opportunity with this fine young lady. Let us see how chapter 2 begins and whats to follow…

The glistening morning light drew a feeling of warmth for some people on this month of October, 2252; but Caprius Seaton was bitter and cold about his feelings of his high school sweet heart – Melina Hampshire. He loved her dearly, but the dagger which pierced his heart had silenced the wolf in him; leaving him lonely with despair. He walked the garden of Meadow-lie trying to settle his feelings for Melina. She was a very attractive young dark haired woman. Her green eyes told a story of a woman longing for a perfect companion that would satisfy her hunger for love and support. She was thin and her attractive figure had all the young men eying her. Any man would say he had the most sensual perfect woman if he had nabbed her. But some young teenage boy like Caprius Seaton found themselves excited and overwhelmingly lucky to have had such a privilege to not only be in the company of a fine young lady; but to go as far as dating her and doing those naughty sinfully good things in the privacy of a bedroom. Caprius had scored well. His only regret at the time was befriending Fenison Torington who had gone behind his back and taken Melina from him. But it was a year later that he had won her heart again. Fenison had said his goodbyes and left Elysium for a career in teaching in another land. But it was another year later that Caprius and Fenison got together again as friends. Melina Hampshire had had enough of both of them. She gave her heart to Caprius and felt he had betrayed her. Seems a lot like a romance novel; torn between two lovers. A soap opera maybe. But no… Melina just wanted a commitment from Caprius and he had the wind blow out the candle and bring the lonely sadness of a weeping puppy; looking for affection. All was lost; and all three of them had moved on. That was nearly six years ago to this date. This was one anniversary date… Caprius didn’t want to remember.

So there you have the introduction to this chapter. We learn a bit about the history of Caprius Seaton, Melina Hampshire, and Fenison Torington; once very good friends, but a dismal ending to their friendship. We will see how all the unfolds next time.

Chapter 1 continues. Caprius Seaton is tormented. Struggling to free him self from the simulation tube, he is angered by what has happened. He sees his friend Simon fighting with the Goncool. Will the Goncool prevail? Is Caprius doomed? Will Caprius free himself and come to Simons rescue? What was the Goncools reason for wanting to destroy the prince of Elysium? Has Caprius in any way done something to have this enemy target him? The weather is stormy. And the odds against the Goncool are high. Simon is a nimble athlete and the odds may be in his favour. Lets see how this plays out. Enjoy the continuing saga…

The man went to the tube. He understood the controls on the door. So he opened up the door. A frost of cold came into the room. “But now, he has to meat up with the spirit world.” He turned his gun toward Simon. Caprius immediately lunged at the man. A shot was fired and Simon was hit. He fell to the floor. Caprius and the man struggled for the gun. Another shot was fired. The man lost grip and dropped the gun onto the floor. As the gun hit the floor, another shot rang out. The bullet had hit the large window, shattering the glass. A cool breeze came from outside of the tower. Caprius swung his fist at the man. It was getting colder in the room. Simon managed to get to his feet and pushed the buttons disengaging the liquid nitrogen. Simon was not badly hurt. He had been shot in the left thy. Caprius and the man swung fists at each other. A swung of a fist sent Caprius flying toward the broken window. He fell to the floor. The man walked over to kick Caprius in the chin. But Caprius, not dazed as it wasn’t a hard kick, grabbed the man’s foot. The man tumbled onto the floor as Caprius moved to the side quickly. Slowly, it began to  warm up in the room. The man began to choke Caprius. Caprius drew a strong blow to the mans nose, breaking it. Standing to his feet, Caprius pulled the man up, then punched the man in the stomach; nocking the wind out of him. They stood by the broken widow. Caprius punched him in the groin with his right knee. The man held his hands swinging up to hit Caprius in the chin. He then swung his fist hard missing, and Caprius through him over, his body. The man summersaulted over, landing on his back on the floor. Caprius dove toward him grabbing his head. They struggled and pushed each other off.  Caprius rushed toward him, striking him in the jaw. The man flew back landing on the floor.  As the man turned his head to the floor, he noticed the gun. He quickly picked up the gun. Aiming at Caprius, shots began to run off. Caprius ran and dove behind a metal desk. A shot hit the desk flying off. Simon grabbed the mans hand and they struggled for the gun. The gun fell and flew toward the simulation tube. Instantly, the gun froze to the floor. Caprius now lunged at the man. Caprius pushed the man toward the broken window. Caprius rushed toward him. They swung fists at each other. As the man was hit, he lost balance. He grabbed Caprius’ shirt, and they both tumbled out the broken window. The man fell toward the bottom. Down, down, down, he went. With a hard crash, he slammed into the pavement below. The man broke every bone in his body. But he was now barely alive. He winced and shrieked with pain.

Caprius Seaton hung by a stone gargoyle. “Simon!” he yelled out. Simon now looking down at him in panic. He quickly, ran out of the chamber to the fire hose. Taking the hose, he dragged it into the chamber. He through the hose out the window. Caprius looked up as he heard the brass of the hose hit the tower concrete. “Its too short! I can’t reach it!” Simon quickly ran to the hall limping. His thy ached from the bullet wound. Looking at the axe on the wall, he smashed the glass with his elbow. He took the axe and went to the hose. Limping, he securely wrapped the hose around his feet. Then he began swinging the axe, hitting the hose. It took a while. But with a final swing of the axe, the hose fell to the floor. Simon quickly, unwrapped the hose from his feet, and took it in hand. He ran into the chamber. He looked around to see what he could tie it too. The closest thing was the simulation tube. He quickly wrapped it around the tube. Then he looked down from the window to call out to Caprius.

“Okay Caprius! Pull your self up.”  Caprius grabbed hold of the hose. He began climbing up. Simon watched as he came closer. Suddenly, there was a flash of lighting in the sky and thunder roared. Simons face lit up in the light as he looked down from the tower. Caprius edged closer. Now inches away, Caprius pulled himself in. The screws that bolt down the tube were lose. The tube began to shake. Caprius pulling himself in now had his feet on the edge of the floor. The screws from the tube had unfastened and the tube came lose, now careering toward the broken window. As Caprius lost balance, Simon quickly pulled him to the side inside the room. The glass tube and the creature, which was frozen solid still, went out through the window. Down, down, down, it fell. The man who lay on the pavement watched as the large tube came down at him. His eyes widened as it came closer and closer. With a large thumping crash, the tube and creature shattered into millions of tiny fragments.

Back in the simulation room, Caprius Seaton and Simon sat on the floor. Caprius was inflicted with great pain. They were exhausted. “Simon. You saved my life. I don’t know how to thank-you.”

“And you saved mine,” said Simon. “I guess, this is what we have to expect from these lands of ours.

“Welcome to Alamptria,” said Caprius with a grin.

So there you have the outcome of this first chapter. Rescued by Simon, Caprius is relieved. He has saved Caprius’ life. Each thanking one another for saving one’s life. But what else has the dark lord Makoor have in store for Caprius? We will just have to wait and see. And as we heard it from the man himself…. welcome to Alamptria.

Back in the chamber, Caprius was gasping for air. In the closet, Simon managed to undo the straps tied to his hands and feet. He opened the closet door. He walked out to see Caprius Seaton fighting for oxygen. Caprius struggled frantically. Could this be the end of the knight who would be knight master? Has this fate been brought upon him only to take him from this planet to prevent the future of Alamptria? Simon quickly went to the monitor. He saw the buttons that were pushed, to be lit. He quickly pushed them to disengage. The man enjoyed Caprius’ suffering. Suddenly, oxygen was being pumped in and within seconds Caprius began to breath. The man startled by him recovering turned back to see Simon by the controls. The man quickly rushed toward Simon. Simon ducked as the man swung his fist at him. The man took another swing to hit Simon in the stomach. Caprius was now breathing easy. He looked out of the tube to see Simon fighting. Caprius struggled to free him self, but he couldn’t. Simon now through a quick punch and hit the man hard. The man fell to the floor dazed. Simon quickly went to the monitor; pushing a button, he released the suction on the tube door. Simon quickly ran toward Caprius. As the man got to his knees, Simon kicked him in the face knocking him down. Simon ran to Caprius, unlocked the door and began unfastening the strap on Caprius’ right hand. He managed to get it loose. The man got to his feet and ran toward the tube. He pulled Simon by the hair; turned him around and swung his fist at him. Simon now drove his forehead into the man’s nose hard. The man’s nose began to bleed. Caprius was unfastening the strap on his left wrist. Now freed, he ran toward Simon and the man. Simon swung his fist to hit the man in the face, The man fell back into Caprius’ arms. They began to struggle. Simon watched to see who would be victorious. Simon slowly walked toward the monitor. Caprius and the man swung fighting. Caprius unleashed his inner strength to twist the mans arm behind his back. The man yelled out in pain. Caprius pushed him hard and the man went flying into the tube. Simon, who was by the monitor, pushed the automatic door suction, which quickly closed the tube door. The man was trapped inside. He began hitting the tube doors with his hands. Caprius walked over to him. “Who sent you?” asked Caprius. The man looked at him and snarled. “I asked you a question. Who sent you?”

“Fuck you Seaton!” said the man.

“We’ve got ways to make you talk,” said Caprius. The man spit at the tube. Then the man smiled at Caprius. Then he opened up his coat pocket and pulled out a flask. The flask was filled with blood.

The man took the rubber cap off the tube and raised it. “This Mr. Seaton, is my destiny. And now I shall have my salvation.” He took the flask to his mouth and began drinking the blood. Seconds later, the man changed to a pail color, and began to transform. Caprius and Simon watched in horror. Simon quickly went underneath the monitor to pull out a rubber hose. Then he pulled out the one beside it and switched the hose and fastened them. The creature had grown. This was a vampire. Caprius watched in horror as he backed away. Simon at the controls pushed a few buttons. The creature, frantic, began pounding the tube. Suddenly, a cold mist began entering the tube. It was liquid nitrogen. Within seconds, the creature turned solid. It was frozen solid. Caprius walked over toward Simon.

“Simon, I don’t know what I would have done without you. I can’t thank-you enough.”

“I’m glad your okay Caprius,” he said.

Suddenly, the chamber door opened and the man from the lobby walked in. He was holding a gun.

The man looked at Caprius and Simon. He began to walk over to them. Then he glanced over at the tube to see his partner in crime frozen solid. “Its over Mr. Seaton. My friend had the blood of Makoor, and now I have my 45 pistol.”

Caprius put up his hands in surrender. The man smirked. “Poor helpless Caprius Seaton.”

“What do you want with me? I’m no agent,” said Caprius.

“No. you certainly won’t be,” said the man. “Makoor has his eyes on you. He senses you as a great threat.”

“Why me?” Caprius was bewildered. “I have no interest in joining the council of Confidus.” He breathed deep. “Who are you people?”

“Who we are is no concern to you considering your situation. We had no intension of harming you until the dark forces of the underworld sensed a great disturbance. You say you have no interest in becoming a knight master. But that would change. Not now. But you would have sought the vim,” said the man.

“I have no interest in Grongone. Or his vim of Petoshine,” said Caprius. “And that’s just a myth.”

“The dark oracle has foreseen your future. And you are a great threat to our society.”

“I don’t understand any of this. You seek to destroy me, when I haven’t even gone after the Bramonians.”

“Who ever said we were Bramonian?”

“I don’t understand. Then who are you people?”

“We seek immortality young Seaton knight.”

“Then what better way than to die and let the lord collect your soul.”

“That’s not exactly what I had in mind. Now, you have distracted me enough.”
